Oficina de Agosto was created in the 90’s by São Paulo artist Carlos Bech, more known as Toty. The studio is located in the village of Bichinho, in the countryside of the state of Minas Gerais, more precisely in the "August Workshop", a place where creativity has no limits. In a region full of backyards, chickens, fish and bananas, where the houses have been built around hard packed mud floors, everything that would come from outside would be looked at with complacent eyes.
Bichinho is a small, forgotten place, hidden among the mountains of Minas Gerais. It was in this ancient mining village of 800 inhabitants, that Toty firmly anchored and germinated his immense creativity.
The studio, which received its name because it was created in the month of August, is an inventive crafting center, transpiring harmony. Creative freedom is a rule and respect for nature is a must. "We never chop down a tree. We always use recycled material ", states Toty. Almost everything comes from rubbish.
And from garbage came art. Bottle lids turn in to the dome of a rustic table lamp. Pieces of wood receive a breath of life and change into colorful sunflowers. Rusted cans are polished and become vases. The possibilities seem infinite. "Our work is simultaneosly rustic and modern, simple and sophisticated."
